Italian bookworms reunite to mark 10th anniversary

The Italian Book Club is seeking past and present members for its 10-year reunion in November.

Founded by Seaholme’s Mirella Giles, the club has expanded beyond reading and discussing poetry and books.

With most members aged over 60, the club has retained its name but now hosts additional activities.

“What I want to aim for is activities that stimulate the mind but also stimulate people into leaving the house – having activities they enjoy,” Ms Giles said.

“It’s giving them a reason to leave the house and socialise so that you have more conversation.”

The club’s motto is “use your mind or lose it”.

Ms Giles said that before the club’s incorporation in 2013, members’ contact details weren’t kept, so notifying past members about the reunion was proving difficult.

The club meets on the second Wednesday of the month from 1-3.30pm at Altona RSL Club.
