Australia’s leading indigenous designers and models will be in the spotlight when an ‘indigenous fashion runway’ comes to Yarraville next month.
To be presented at Kindred Studios by Global Indigenous Management as part of the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival’s cultural program, the event will showcase handcrafted indigenous fashion designs from Australia and the Pacific.
Organiser Tina Waru says the indigenous fashion runway will present modern interpretations of cultural identity.
“Our runway show looks to celebrate the diverse cultures of various lands and provide a platform for emerging designers and models.
“We’re working with young indigenous people who want to take their careers into the fashion industry.”
Ms Waru said Global Indigenous Management encouraged young indigenous designers to draw on symbols and materials that explore their cultural identities.
While wanting to create opportunities for new and emerging indigenous fashion talent, Ms Waru is inspired most by the chance to nurture confidence and self-esteem in indigenous youth.
The fashion runway will be at Kindred Studios, 212a Whitehall Street, Yarraville, from 2-3pm on Sunday, March 8.
Tickets cost $45 from www.ticketek.com.au.
