Inundated by seaweed

Hobsons Bay council says seaweed is washing ashore as quickly as it is removed at Altona beach. Extreme bay and weather conditions and unfavourable high tides have been blamed. In the first week of March,
140 tonnes of seaweed was removed. For the entire month of March last year, 115 tonnes was collected.

Spitting arrest

A woman was arrested at Altona beach last week after spitting at people along the Esplanade and verbally abusing people in Pier Street. Acting Sergeant Russell King said police were called about 12.30pm on Wednesday.
The Altona North woman, aged in her 30s, was taken to Werribee’s Mercy Hospital for a mental health assessment.

Tree petition

A 35-signature petition tabled at last night’s Maribyrnong council meeting is seeking the removal of a plane tree at the northwest corner of Cowper and Talbots streets, Footscray. The petition argues the tree is inappropriate for footpaths, drops leaves and branches, creaks in the wind and has been pruned into an ugly shape.
