FOODY HEAVEN

A venue can make or break a special occasion, which is why it’s important to choose a place with excellent customer service and diverse bistro and function menus. A place such as Altona RSL.

“Our function room caters to a wide range of people, from intimate gatherings to parties of 200 people,” bistro manager Wendy Selvidge says. “We’re more than happy to customise our function room to suit each individual’s needs.”

Altona RSL caters to everything from engagements, weddings and milestone birthdays to school graduations, work conferences and sport presentations.

There’s an extensive range of dining options for functions, including a buffet, finger food and set menus, along with a private bar for the room.

And there’s a dance floor and projector to keep guests happy.

It’s not just the function room that draws crowds to Altona RSL, as Gunners Bar & Bistro is also a hit with couples and families.

The bistro menu has everything from steaks, pasta and risotto dishes to seafood and oriental meals with a twist.

“We have weekly specials which incorporate fresh produce that changes depending on the season, but there’s sure to be something for everyone, including gluten-free and vegetarian options” head chef Chris Cox says.

“And our ever-changing mouth-watering desserts are worth leaving room for.”

Popular entrees include the Greek lamb salad, paprika-spiced and served on a fresh salad with toasted Turkish bread and tzatziki; and hand-made Chinese-spiced pork spring rolls with plum and ginger dipping sauces.

For main, it’s hard to beat the Asian-style pork rib-eye on a noodle and bok choy stir-fry with honey-plum glaze; or the veal scaloppini in a creamy garlic and mushroom sauce with mash potato, wilted spinach and seasonal vegetables.

House-made desserts, including bread and butter or sticky-date puddings, are the ideal way to top off a hearty meal.

“We welcome new customers to dine in our bistro or enjoy their next function with us and look forward to seeing our regulars at the RSL,” Wendy says.

Gunners Bar & Bistro at Altona RSL, 31 Sargood Street, Altona. Opens for lunch and dinner Tuesday-Sunday.
