Laughter rules the west

Expect laughs by the truckload when the Melbourne International Comedy Festival lands in the west this week.

As well as hosting a number of events, the inner-west is well-represented by local comics holding shows right across town.

Footscray’s new kid on the comedy block, Kirsty Webeck, will perform a 12-date run of

Hoping For The Best in Collingwood before hitting the road for shows in Canberra, Sydney and Brisbane.

Seddon comedian Russell Wigginton (pictured), who has been making his mark on the Melbourne scene for the past few years with his cheeky observational banter, has assembled a stellar line-up of comedians for a run of performances.

The UK-expat won the Sugar Laughs Comedy competition last year and has featured in previous Melbourne Comedy Festival sell-out showcases, including

Best of British and Tri-nations Comedy.

This year he is producing and performing in

Keep Calm It’s British Comedy at The Elephant & Wheelbarrow in Bourke Street until April 19.

“The show is a selection of UK comedians with some international acts thrown in,” he said.

Meanwhile Heath Franklin will make a one-off return to the Yarraville Club as Chopper Read in

Repeat Offender this Friday night.

Effie will bring her show to the club on April 17 and 18.

The Westside Comedy Showcase will bring budding local amateur comedians and performers together in one of five shows being held at the Bluestone Church Arts Space in Footscray for Comedy Out West.

Shows include

Phi & Me, Kid’s Party Confidential, Westside Open Mic and the free Westside Comedy Showcase at 4pm, Sunday, April 19.

A workshop will be held on Friday, April 10, for anyone hoping to polish their comedy skills ahead of the showcase.
