No more kidding around for Sean Murphy

After seven years on the kid’s party circuit, Sean Murphy has more than his fair share of battle-scars.

Murphy will share these stories and more in his acclaimed show, Kids’ Party Confidential, at Footscray’s Bluestone Church Arts Space from Thursday as part of Comedy Out West.

The “physical and psychological toll” of sweating into Shrek masks, turning up as Batman to a party with only two guests and other horror stories has been woven into an hour-long show.

“I really started kids party entertainment at a low ebb,” Murphy said. “But dressing up as Batman was something I turned out to be good at and it became hard to resist.”

Many of the parties were spent as Batman or Spiderman, but his favourites were spent as a Jedi – “you’re pretty much just in your pyjamas” – or as a pirate.

“As a pirate, you are basically there to insult people, as long as you do it in the appropriate pirate talk then you can get away with anything,” he said.

Murphy said kids’ parties could be addictive but after seven years of them, his new show was a way of closing that chapter of his life.

“We play games, sing songs, have the cake and have a special birthday boy or girl emerge from the audience … we really do have a party!”

Kids’ Party Confidential will be at Bluestone Church Arts Space from April 8-18. Tickets cost $10-$20. For bookings, go to www.kidspartyconfidential.com.
