Industrial emissions at Yarraville on Saturday apparently were contributed to by other chemical plants in the area, a statement issued by ICI on Monday said.

The statement said: “We can only assume that a combination of emissions from chemical plants in the area, of which ICI is one, together with the particular wind direction and atmospheric conditions, caused the reported inconvenience to local residents.”

April 16, 1975

Footscray footballer Neil Sachse was a last-minute inclusion last Saturday in the match which made him a cripple.

The Bulldogs’ football manager, Mr Kevin Webb, did not know until 10.30am on Saturday whether Sachse, troubled by a back injury, would play.

“Neil had been having treatment for the injury received in the game against Melbourne,” Mr Webb said. “But he rang me on Saturday to say he was fit and available for the game.”

April 16, 1975

The City of Altona is financially disadvantaged because it has a lower income per household than other parts of Melbourne.

Cr Les Crofts said this in evidence before Commissioner DV Moye, at a Grants Commission hearing in the council chambers last week. Cr Crofts was supporting Altona Council’s application for an Australian Government grant.

The Housing Ministry’s proposed public housing development in Cole Street, Williamstown, will go ahead following a ruling by the town planning tribunal last Friday.

Anti-public housing campaigner Cr Ian Thomas said he was “devastated” but not “surprised” by the tribunal’s decision.

The tribunal hearing was a “puppet show”; it appeared the decision had been made before the hearing, he [claimed].
