WRFL: Spotswood fights back to beat St Albans

A scintillating second half saw Spotswood come from behind to beat St Albans and claim its first win of the Western Region Football League division 1 season at McLean Reserve on Saturday.

The Woodsmen trailed by 31 points at quarter-time and 23 at the main break but came home to pile on 14 goals to six after half-time and run out 23-point winners.

The big guns came to the fore for the Woodsmen when the game was on the line, including onballer David Iaccarino, who was best-on-ground, Michael Cassidy, David Sablich and Murray Boyd.

Shaun Buttigieg-Clarke, who crossed from second division Caroline Springs in the summer, caught the eye with five goals for the Woodsmen, while Christian Elliott and Spencer Davis booted three each.

The Woodsmen squared the ledger at 1-1 ahead of the match against old foes Port Melbourne Colts on Saturday.

Altona was brought back down to earth by premiership favourites Deer Park in its home opener at JK Grant Reserve.

The Vikings stalled out of the blocks, scoreless in the first term and played catch up for the remainder in the 76-point loss.

In division 3, Parkside held on to defeat a fast-finishing Laverton by eight points in the clash of the Magpies.

The Keenan boys – James and Ryan – were named best for the Parksiders. Aaron Gauci and Brent Kelly booted three goals each.
