Williamstown CYMs is on the winners’ list for the first time since its promotion to the Victorian Amateur Football Association’s Premier C grade. The CYs booted five straight goals in the last term to secure a 15-point second round win over Old Camberwell at Gordon Barnard Reserve on Saturday. Nick Ebinger was unstoppable for CYs with six goals, while Sean McVernon, Ben Deller and Jack Gray were among the best. The CYs face a stern test against unbeaten Peninsula at Fearon Reserve on Saturday.

A late goal from Slave Bozinovski saw Altona Magic edge out Sydenham Park 2-1 in Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1 north-west at Paisley Park on Saturday. The Magic are undefeated with two wins and two draws, and still maintaining touch with the ladder-leading sides. Altona East Phoenix picked up maximum points for the first time this season with a 3-1 away win over Keilor Park after a Craig Tomkins double. Yarraville Glory is three points clear on top of the state league 2 north-west ladder after an entertaining 3-2 win over Essendon United, sparked by a double from Keith Burch.
Basketball
The turbulent start to the season continued for the Altona Gators, with its losing streak extending to six in the Big V basketball men’s division 1. The Gators were thrashed 88-76 by Geelong at the Altona Sports Centre on Sunday, Joey Mausar being the only shining light with 27 points, including four threes. The struggling Gators will be out to break their duck when they entertain Sunbury Jets at home on Sunday.
Rugby league
Altona Roosters were comprehensively out-played, 34-10, by western rivals Werribee Bears in the Victorian Rugby League first grade at Haines Drive Reserve on Saturday night. The Bears will retain the Tyrel Hunt Memorial Shield for a second season running.
