Netball
City West Falcons had a commanding 76-29 win over lowly ACU Sovereigns in the VNL championship at the State Netball and Hockey Centre. Falcons’ goalers Kath Knott (40 goals) and Steph Tyrell (32) combined for 72 goals, while Maggie Lind had a brief stint in the circle for five. The Falcons’ task will be much tougher tonight at 7 when they meet Boroondara Express in a top-of-the-table clash at the SNHC.
Soccer
Altona Magic heaped further misery on FFV men’s state league 1 cellar-dweller Corio in a 4-0 rout at Hume Reserve on Saturday. The Magic moved into second spot on the ladder, two points behind leaders North Sunshine Eagles. Altona East Phoenix were North Sunshine’s latest victim, going down 3-2, despite a double from Craig Tomkins. The Phoenix sit mid-table after five games.
Hockey
Footscray has raced to the top of the Hockey Victoria men’s premier league standings after back-to-back wins to start the season. The Bulldogs were victorious, 3-1, over Powerhouse-St Kilda. Altona was edged out 2-1 by MCC. In the women’s premier league, Footscray kept its perfect record intact with a 5-1 win over Mentone and, while Altona produced a better showing, it was still beaten 2-1 by MCC.
