Williamstown: Greek feast for asylum seekers

A western suburbs food blogger is holding his biggest charity dinner to date to raise money for asylum seeker support organisation West Welcome Wagon (WWW).

Kenny Weir, who created the Consider the Sauce blog, is hosting a Greek feast for 50 people at Williamstown’s Santorini Restaurant.

The banquet on June 24 costs $50 a head with all money after food costs going to WWW. Consider the Sauce will not be taking any proceeds.

“The banquet normally costs $55 so we are getting it for $5 less and still raising money for WWW,” Mr Weir said.

WWW is a volunteer-run, not-for-profit community group. It has more than 4400 members on its Facebook page and delivers quality donations, such as household furniture, food and clothes, to asylum seekers from Footscray to Geelong.

Mr Weir said the Williamstown event enabled people to help out while having fun and eating exceedingly well.

“WWW takes care of many needs facing about 200 homes containing about 1000 people; people who are facing an uncertain future, who cannot work and have very little to get by on,” he said.

“They provide them, too, something just as important – simple human contact and companionship.”
