Basketball
Altona Gators are in a world of hurt, slumping to their eighth straight defeat to start the Big V basketball men’s division 1 season. The winless Gators were scorched by Mildura Heat 114-58 at Toyota Hothouse on Saturday night. Joey Mausar (21 points) and Claudio Campos (12 points and 10 rebounds) were the only Gators who could hold their heads high amid a dismal team performance. The Gators put up more shots than the Heat but landed a paltry 24.4 per cent compared with the Heat’s impressive 53 per cent.
Football
Williamstown CYMS found the going tough against VAFA Premier C finals contenders Monash Blues. The CYs could only manage four goals in the 73-point loss at Burbank Oval, with all of them coming before half-time. The result leaves CYs battling in third-last spot on the ladder ahead of Saturday’s trip to Therry Penola for a re-match of last year’s division 1 grand final, which CYs famously won by 56 points.
Hockey
Altona fought back from a goal down at half-time to earn a share of the points in a 3-3 draw with Hawthorn in the Hockey Victoria men’s premier league. Chris Coleman was outstanding for the A’s with two goals. Footscray also had to settle on a draw in a 2-2 game with MCC. In the women’s premier league, Tegan Purser scored a double as Footscray beat MCC 5-4 in an entertaining, high-scoring contest, while Altona was downed 5-1 by Hawthorn.
