Hockey

Altona celebrated its first success of the Hockey Victoria women’s premier league season with a 2-1 over Kew at Elgar Park on Saturday. Stephanie Young and Phoebe Rothfield found the back of the net to help the Seagulls end a four-game losing run. Footscray was pipped 1-0 by Greensborough to tumble out of the top four. In the men’s premier league, Altona had a jaw dropping 8-2 win over Casey, sparked by a hat-trick to Andrew Scanlon and a double to Chris Coleman. Footscray suffered a 2-1 defeat to Greensborough.

Lacrosse

Footscray sent a warning to the rest of the Lacrosse Victoria men’s state league with a 17-6 pummelling of local rivals Williamstown at Angliss Reserve on Saturday. Peter Kwas scored a goal in every quarter for the Bulldogs to finish with six for the game, while James Lawerson was the leader in assists with five. The Dogs have moved a game clear on top of the ladder, while Williamstown has dropped to third.

Cycling

Andrew Bonello took out the fifth round of Footscray Cycling Club’s 2015 winter road season at Balliang in the Brisbane Ranges. Bonello finished ahead of Glenn O’Rourke in a sprint for the line in the A grade event, while Hong Kong rider Vincent Lau claimed third. The other winners were: Trevor Perry (B grade), Steve Muscat (C grade) and Tom Moloney (D grade).
