Students at the Catholic Regional College know it only takes a small effort to make a world of a difference.
About four times a year, 15 students and two staff members volunteer their time after school to make sandwiches for the St Vincent De Paul soup kitchen at Maidstone. The rest of the school chips in to buy the ingredients.
And about eight times a year, several students help out on the society’s soup van which travels the streets of Footscray offering free meals for people who are struggling to feed themselves.
The school’s social justice co-ordinator, Margaret Rowe Watts, said she contacted St Vincent De Paul three years ago to find somewhere where students could be given a chance to “make a difference”.
“Many of our students want to help,” Ms Rowe Watts said.
“This is a way for them to do that.” She said the school offers many different opportunities for students to volunteer with a variety of community groups.
Sandwich making, she said, is one small action that has a direct and very positive impact on others.
