WRFL: Altona closes in on ladder leaders with win over Albion

Altona is back within touching distance of the top five in division 1 of the Western Region Football League after a runaway win over bottom side Albion at JR Parsons Reserve on Saturday.

The Vikings took their time to break free from the home side’s leash, but eventually broke free with seven goals to one in the third term.

Jack Marlais, who kicked three goals, was named best on ground, while playing assistant coach Jayden Post, four-goal forward Cam D’Altera and Pele Manivong were also brilliant for the Vikings.

The 15.13 (103) – 8.13 (61) victory took the Vikings up to sixth, but their destiny will be out of their hands for a while yet.

They have the bye this weekend ahead of the Queen’s birthday break, so they will not play again until June 13.

Spotswood is back for one game before the break and will enter Saturday’s away trip to Sunshine fresh after their bye last weekend.

In division 2, West Footscray was flattened by Wyndhamvale in the top-of-the table clash at Wyndhamvale South Oval.

The Roosters burst out of the blocks to lead by 23 at quarter-time, but were out-scored 14 goals to seven from that point on to lose by 26, despite four goals to Mick Lindsey.

North Footscray kept Manor Lakes at arm’s length all game, running out 39-point winners at Howqua Street Reserve.

Robert Cavka, Kaine Williams and Blake Pilkington each booted three for the victorious Devils, while Sam Kater capped a best-on-ground display with two goals.

Yarraville-Seddon had a resounding 73-point win over bottom-placed Sunshine Heights at Ainsworth Reserve.

Gordon Hillsdon was superb for the Eagles with four goals in a best-afield showing.

In division 3, Parkside sent a warning to the rest of the competition with a 76-point thrashing of Tarneit, while Laverton was brave in a 32-point defeat to the Wyndham Suns.

In the VAFA, Nick Ebinger slotted five goals for Williamstown CYMS, but they were no match for Premier C ladder leaders Marcellin, losing by 68 points at Marcellin College.
