WRFL: Spotswood fights back to beat Sunshine Kangaroos in thriller

In an impressive escape act, Spotswood has come from behind to beat Sunshine Kangaroos by one point in a Western Region Football League division 1 thriller at Kinder Smith Reserve.

The Woodsmen were staring down the barrel of defeat on Saturday when trailing by 14 points at three-quarter time in a low-scoring affair, but they turned it on with a four-goals-to-two last quarter to win by the barest of margins.

Lachlan Fairley’s purple patch of form for the Woodsmen in the past month continued with a best-on-ground display.

Murray Boyd chimed in with two goals, while captain Tom Langlands was in the thick of the action.

It was a vital four points for the Woodsmen, who stayed within touching distance of top side Deer Park going into the Queen’s birthday break.

In division 2, Yarraville-Seddon took ownership of third place after a hard-fought 26-point win over North Footscray at Hansen Reserve.

Sam Boyce booted four goals for the victorious Eagles to make it 28 for the season, giving him the lead on the division’s goalkickers’ list.

West Footscray ground out a seven- point win over Caroline Springs on a tough trip to Town Centre Oval.

The Roosters almost shot themselves in the foot with terrible conversion for goal – 6.17 for the day – but found a way to victory on the back of impressive performances by Corey Thomas, who kicked two goals, Ziad Kadour and Jamie Zerafa.

The much-fancied Roosters are well placed in second.

In division 3, Laverton Magpies have flown up to fourth after a nail-biting five-point win over Tarneit at Wootten Road Reserve.

Richard Mulroy booted three goals for the Magpies; Ben Cook was named best on ground.

Parkside was super-competitive against top side Albanvale before losing by 17 points at Henry Turner Reserve.
