Fit for the road ahead

Driving is a skill that needs to be kept up to date.

As traffic increases and roads get bigger and busier, drivers need to be ‘match-fit’ and ensure they’re always alert.

An expo for older drivers will be held next Saturday with important updates on road safety, driving while taking medications and checks on driving techniques and vehicle safety.

The Supporting Senior Drivers Expo will be held at the Hobsons Bay Civic Centre at Altona.

Experts will be available to give confidential and free driving assessments, while roadworthy checks on vehicles will be provided by a qualified driving instructor.

VicRoads will provide information on how to regularly update vehicles and keep cars in a roadworthy condition, and RoadSafe Westgate chairman Jim Giddings, head of an advocacy group that runs road safety programs, will be there to talk about his organisation, which is committed to keeping older drivers on the road longer.

“Everyone can be better drivers with a few simple changes, like keeping up with new road laws,” Mr Giddings said. “Making sure their health is as good as can be is important, as is getting rid of bad driving habits.”

Participants will receive a complementary Senior Drivers Expo pack. Morning tea and a light lunch will be supplied.
