Nathan ‘Whippy’ Griggs’ cracking success

Nathan ‘Whippy’ Griggs has become the whipcracking world record-holder.

The Altona-based champion whipcracker broke a Guinness World Record by cracking two whips 530 times in one minute. The previous record was 513.

He now has his eyes on another record.

“I want to break the record for the longest whipcrack,” he said. “The record is 63 metres for the longest whip.”

Mr Griggs, an artisan whip maker, will be making the world’s longest whip himself.

“The guy who has the world record for the longest whip made his out of nylon rope,” he said. “When I make my longest whip, I want to make it out of cowhide, proper leather, because I think a whip should be made properly.

“I’m actually looking for a sponsor for buying the leather.”

Mr Griggs is performing shows in the Northern Territory but plans to perform at a local venue when he returns to Altona.
