Friends of Altona Library ready to celebrate 50th birthday

Ethel Muller, 97, a long-time Friends of Altona Library member, will be among those celebrating Altona library’s 50th birthday on Saturday.

The library was opened the same year the eternal flame marking 50 years of ANZAC was lit outside the Hobsons Bay civic centre.

Part of Queen Street was closed as the library was officially opened before a crowd of 500 people.

The building cost 46,717 pounds and the books 13,370 pounds.

A mural in the children’s corner, since removed, was created by Marjorie Howden, the illustrator of the John and Betty readers.

On Saturday, people will be sharing their library stories at a celebration from 10am-1pm.

There will be multicultural performances, games, music, craft and face painting, with the cake cutting at  noon.
