Brooklyn’s lacrosse champ trawls web for backers

Brooklyn’s Lachlan Mackinnon has been selected to represent Australia in lacrosse at September’s world championships in the United States.

But as a minor sport in Australia, with limited government funding, selection places a heavy burden on players, who have to pay their own way to the world titles.

Mackinnon, 24, was among 23 players selected for the Australian men’s indoor lacrosse team to compete in the FIL men’s world indoor lacrosse championships in Syracuse, New York, from September 18-27.

Mackinnon started in the sport aged four and now plays with Altona Lacrosse.

For the past two years, he has undergone a rigorous selection process involving training camps and national competitions.

Mackinnon said the Australian Lacrosse Association received no government funding for high performance and only limited commercial sponsorship.

So he has created a gofundme page to help raise money towards his American dream of Australian gold.

The lacrosse world championships are held every four years.
