NAPLAN: Don’t stress over results, say principals

EDUCATION leaders have warned parents against placing too much importance on schools’ national literacy and numeracy test results.

The latest NAPLAN results were released on Friday on the federal government’s updated My School website, which publishes test results of students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9.

Victorian Principals Association president Gabrielle Leigh said while NAPLAN tests were a good idea, schools should not pressure students to return good results.

“They shouldn’t carry that much weight. People place too much emphasis on them and we had situations last year where year 3 students were under immense stress. The results are just a snapshot and not a reflection on students’ work over a year.”
