Chelsea Hatherall: Our top young citizen

CHELSEA Hatherall has been named Hobsons Bay’s young citizen of the year, recognised for making a “real difference” to women, young people and multicultural communities.

Chelsea, 25, Newport, has co-ordinated events for White Ribbon Day, the Cancer Council, Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation and Amnesty International, and raised funds for The Substation, Laverton Community Kitchen and Victoria Flood Appeal.

Presenting the award on Friday, mayor Tony Briffa said Chelsea also hosted the Eat So They Can event to raise money for Kids in Kenya and was accepted into the emerging cultural leaders program, gaining skills to develop a cultural exchange project with a community centre in a remote fishing village in Brazil.

She’s also a member of the council’s women’s advisory committee and is a regular participant in the Art in Public Places program.
