Hobsons Bay Council pushes for car park, station rezoning

HOBSONS Bay Council is calling for a multi-deck car park near Laverton station and the rezoning of Aircraft station to zone 1.

The council last week voted to seek Wyndham Council’s support in lobbying for the car park, and to push for the rezoning of Hoppers Crossing and Werribee stations to zone 1.

Hobsons Bay mayor Tony Briffa said the new Williams Landing station, to cater for the new suburb, would increase the number of commuters driving to Laverton to catch a cheaper zone 1 city-bound train.

“At Williams Landing we’ll have about 7000 to 8000 residents – that’s just over a kilometre west of Laverton station,” he said.

“It will be zoned 2, just as Aircraft station is. Impacts at Laverton station are significant with people from all over Point Cook, Altona Meadows, Hoppers Crossing, even Werribee, coming to Laverton to park their cars because that’s a zone 1 station.

“There is significant amounts of vacant land there, owned by VicTrack, along the railway line … and this proposal [by Hobsons Bay] suggests to address that issue by creating a multi-deck car park and/or rezoning other stations to relieve the pressure on Laverton.”

According to Wyndham Council’s 2011 traffic volumes report, Point Cook Road – a main arterial from Wyndham to Laverton – carries 22,170 vehicles a day, up from 16,850 in 2007. -with Nick Toscano
