Newport workshop brings heady brew of culture to the kitchen

YARRAVILLE’S Amanda Cuyler and Newport’s Jayne Azzopardi will share their passion for live culture-fermented food at four workshops next month.

The ‘Viva La Ferment Fever’ workshops will be held at Outlets Co-op Neighbourhood House in Newport on June 9, 16, 23 and 30.

During the month, people will learn about vegetables, beverages, grains and dairy products.

Ms Cuyler said fermented food wasn’t “rocket science” and no special equipment was needed.

“I’ve always been interested in doing whatever I can to get away from purchasing it, and then getting an awareness of the health benefits made me more interested.

“It’s fascinating that the word ‘culture’ describes both micro-organisms in food and the level of sophistication of society.

“It’s an amazing feeling to nourish one’s family and friends with homemade bread, cheese, pickles and cider … I feel infinitely cultured.”

The workshops grew out of a monthly experimenting group, called ‘Fermenting Friday Friends,’ co-founded by Newport’s Kate Leslie.

They are presented by Transition Hobsons Bay in partnership with Very Edible Gardens.
