VFL: Woeful Seagulls hanker for home

WILLIAMSTOWN’S up and down VFL season continued as it was savaged by Bendigo on Saturday.

After a commanding performance in the last round against Coburg, the Seagulls were looking to continue their good form.

They started well and looked likely to dominate.

But the bright start ended halfway through the first term as Bendigo took control to win by 19points, 18.14 (122) to 15.13 (103).

Team general manager Brendan Curry described the performance as disappointing.

“After the win a couple of weeks ago, this result is really disappointing. We didn’t have enough good players and over-used the ball.”

Curry said the margin flattered the Seagulls and would have been much worse if not for injuries to Bendigo.

Bendigo lost Justin Maddern early with an ankle injury; big man David Hille was rested for much of the second half; captain Trent Shinners was stretchered off in the third term and Anthony Long was hampered by a knee injury.

“Injuries allowed us to get back into the game, but with a lack of contributors you can’t win games at this level.

“They had an even spread of goalkickers and players winning the ball. We were poor across the board and there wasn’t much you could find to like in the game.”

Curry said he was hoping for a better performance next week against Box Hill, which is just below the Seagulls on the ladder.

It will be the first game played at the Williamstown ground for two years.

“We’ll have to play better than this week if we want to win.

“We will be looking for contributions from all 23 players. We were very disappointed with the result and will be looking to do something about it.”
