MUSIC lovers are being invited on a journey into the unknown this weekend as Footscray-based The Amplified Elephants perform an ‘intergalactic odyssey’.
The ‘Elephants’ are an ensemble for sound artists with and without a disability, and have been part of the Footscray Community Arts Centre’s ArtLife Program since 2006.
Their latest free concert, Galactic Eye, is an ‘abstract sound’ work.
Galactic Eye is built on a score by director James Hullick, the non-narrative piece ‘bringing together sound, art, science, philosophy and community’.
Hullick says: “We’ve created a sonic score that is atmospheric, distinctive and imaginative; something that everyone can experience.”
The show is the latest work of Hullick’s ‘interabilities sound art program’, the Click Clack Project. It features Federation Bells and audio-robotic machines built by Hullick and Richie Allen, alongside musicians from the BOLT ensemble including Melbourne University head of percussion Peter Neville, harpist Mary Doumany, violinist Andrea Keeble, violist Jason Bunn and Anita Hustas on double bass.
The show will be a warm-up for a trip to Japan by The Amplified Elephants later this year.
Galactic Eye will be at the Footscray Community Arts Centre Performance Space from 7.30pm, Friday to Sunday.
