Qenos moves to cut carbon emissions

FEDERAL Climate Change and Energy Efficiency Minister Greg Combet has praised Chinese-owned, Altona-based plastics manufacturer Qenos for investing $240 million on expansion and a cogeneration plant.

The plant, expected to be operating by the end of the year, will reduce carbon emissions by 100,000 tonnes a year. “The cogen facility will produce 20-megawatt hours of electricity and that means this plant can be entirely self-sufficient on its own electricity supply and also feed surplus power back into the grid,” Mr Combet said.

Qenos was dismayed to be named one of Australia’s 500 biggest polluters under the government’s carbon tax scheme.
