La Mama gets mobile with move to Newport Substation

THE Substation at Newport is bringing one of Australia’s most revered independent theatre companies to Melbourne’s west with La Mama Mobile.

The Substation director Jeremy Gaden said La Mama Theatre’s new touring platform would present a selection of its shows in the west each year.

The first is The Baby Show, opening July 26 and running for four days.

“Not only is bringing La Mama to the west a significant outcome, The Baby Show is written and performed by renowned performance-maker Donna Jackson, a long-time Newport resident, and directed by John Bolton, a long-time Williamstown resident,” Mr Gaden said.

The show explores the theme of babies – who has them, how do we get them and what do we do if we don’t want them – in a performance that has variously been described as sometimes hilarious and sometimes, well, a bit harsh bordering on offensive. Ms Jackson’s previous one-woman show, Car Maintenance, Explosives and Love was nominated for a Greenroom Award and toured throughout Australia and at the Edinburgh Festival. She also founded the Melbourne Women’s Circus.
