No EPA follow-up on Brooklyn stench, due to ‘invalid’ complaints

REPORTS of a “rotting meat” smell at Brooklyn late last Thursday will not be investigated by the EPA because “invalid” information was provided by five people who called the pollution hotline.

Hobsons Bay councillor for Altona North, Michael Raffoul, said it was “very disappointing”, given he was one of the residents who called.

EPA spokeswoman Lauren Wall said the EPA received 355 pollution reports for Brooklyn from January to June.

“We remind the community that valid contact details including location of caller is required in reporting to EPA’s Pollution Hotline on 1300372842.”

Ms Wall said two of the five callers gave their details but were unable to pinpoint the source of the odour. As a result, EPA will not follow up. Cr Raffoul said the EPA must revisit the guidelines currently in place.
