Police stunned as drivers ignore Altona floodwaters

POLICE have expressed disappointment that even after a driver became trapped in a flooded Altona creek on Saturday, other motorists continued trying to cross.

A man was rescued from the roof of his car just after 8.10pm after floodwaters had swamped him in Kororoit Creek.

Metropolitan Fire Brigade spokesman Glen Thompson said the man had tried to drive across the creek in Racecourse Road, but heavy rainfall meant water was higher than usual.

The driver climbed on to the car’s roof before fire crews, police and paramedics arrived at 8.10pm.

“A firefighter waded into the creek with a rope around his waist with another firefighter attached to his rope, and the occupant walked out with him,” Mr Thompson said.

The stretch of road has a history of similar incidents when the creek overflows from heavy rainfall.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the rescued man was not injured and was taken to a relative’s house nearby.

Hobsons Bay’s Inspector Bill Mathers said the man’s predicament didn’t deter other motorists.

“Police are disappointed that even after this event, other drivers tried to cross the flooded roadway. We need to use some common sense. If your car is a four-wheel-drive, it doesn’t mean it’s capable of going through deep water on flooded roads.” -Nick Toscano and Goya Dmytryshchak
