Vital volunteers a wheel help for Hobsons Bay’s frail

Barry Bates (pictured) is one of Hobsons Bay’s 65 volunteers who help deliver food for the elderly, frail and people with a disability.

Today marks National Meals on Wheels Day, which recognises the work of volunteers.

Council community services director Peter Hunt said Meals on Wheels was vital in helping more than 350 residents stay healthy and happy in their own surroundings.

“Presently, there are 65 volunteers who help the council’s food services unit deliver 1300 meals to residents in need each week.

The council appreciates these volunteers and their dedication to assisting others.”

Meals are prepared in the council’s $24million state-of-the-art kitchen at Altona, which services 20 other Victorian councils and shires.
