Maribyrnong states the case for women’s equality

THE Maribyrnong community has taken a stand in support of gender equity and prevention of violence against women.

Several community statements were launched last week as part of the International Women’s Day event in Footscray. They will be plastered around the municipality and on promotional products.

One statement, developed by council-run workshops with community input, reads: “We the people of Maribyrnong declare our commitment to a community where opportunities for success are equally available to women and men; where our mothers, daughters and sisters live free from the cycle of violence; where their thoughts, ideas and opinions are heard and respected and their choices and goals in life celebrated and supported.”

Other statements include:

■Respectful communities prosper where women prosper.

■Diverse communities prosper where women prosper.

■Equal communities prosper where women are equal.

■Champion teams, champion women and girls.

■She deserves respect, just like you.

■Women leaders, lead workplaces.

■Who’s cooking dinner tonight? Share the chores.

■Courageous dads raise courageous daughters.
