Bulldogs fine assistant coach over drink-driving

WESTERN Bulldogs assistant coach Steven King has been fined $5000 by the club after he was charged with drink-driving in Geelong on Sunday.

King was charged at 9.30am while he was returning to Melbourne after spending the night in Geelong.

In a statement, the Bulldogs said King had apologised to the club and players and would undertake community service and undergo counselling and further education in relation to responsible consumption of alcohol.

The club decided the sanctions after a meeting with King this morning.

‘‘There are absolutely no excuses for my actions – it was stupid and completely irresponsible,’’ King said.

‘‘I am extremely disappointed with myself and want to sincerely apologise to everyone I have let down and hurt – especially the club and my family.’’

Club chief executive Simon Garlick said the club was bitterly disappointed by King’s actions.

‘‘While we know that Steven is gutted by the incident, there is no excuse for this behaviour. Our players and staff all participate in education highlighting the importance of the responsible use of alcohol.’’

King will contribute $5000 to Road Trauma Support Services Victoria, a community-based, not-for-profit organisation offering a state-wide counselling, education and support service to people whose lives have been impacted by road trauma.

‘‘The club will now fully support Steven to learn from his mistake and redeem himself after such a disappointing experience,” Garlick said.
