Footscray hip-hop revival a Raw-ing success

HIP-hop is alive and well in Footscray, albeit in a new guise.

Maribyrnong Council’s Urban hip-hop program, the launching pad for local act Urban Voices, has returned as Raw Elements.

Young people can work on their hip-hop skills, write and record lyrics and music and create video clips with the industry’s shining lights.

Maribyrnong mayor John Cumming said the program offered a chance to be creative in a fun environment.

“I encourage any young person who’s interested in music and hip-hop to come and get involved; it’s a great opportunity to make music, meet like-minded people and get your music out into the world.”

Gender equity remains a key theme of the program, with young people sharing positive messages through the music and performing at the council’s White Ribbon Day event in November.

Raw Elements meets at Phoenix Youth Centre, 72 Buckley Street, Footscray, from 4-6pm on Mondays. More details: 90914700
