DANIEL Zewdu has a great smile. It’s a shame listeners to his 3CR community radio program can’t see it, but something they can’t miss is the passion in his voice.
Since arriving in Australia from Ethiopia in 1998, the Maribyrnong resident has pursued his vision for helping create links between the Ethiopian and broader communities.
He says the weekly Arada radio program he co-presents with Abiy Solomon is an invaluable way for the Ethiopian Australian community to stay connected.
“The Ethiopian community in Australia is getting into the second generation now,” he says.
“What are we trying to do from the grassroots now is to make something for the future for our younger people and the wider community.”
Arada is an Ethiopian word to describe people coming from different backgrounds to share their skills and talents. He hopes this can be a model for more established migrants and more recent settlers to work together.
“We are very lucky in Australia. I am so proud to be an Ethiopian Australian,” he said.
“There is plenty of opportunity, but we have to find it, we have to use it. For that, those who have been here longer have to help.
“We need to find the kids who can be inspiring for others their age.”
Putting together a weekly radio program and being involved in a range of other projects takes a lot of his time, but Mr Zewdu retains his passion for his work by looking at the successes.
He has been inspired to keep going by the efforts of his fellow Australians.
“I’m really impressed by Australians, how they are involved in volunteer work, locally, nationally and even internationally,” he says.
“I’m hopeful I am inspiring the community, the youth especially.
