REFUGEES have long found a welcoming home in Maribyrnong, a fact being celebrated in week-long festivities to mark Refugee Week.
Mayor John Cumming says it’s fitting to mark the positive contributions that refugees make and to help the wider community understand their stories.
“There is a week of celebrations and we encourage the community to get involved and make this a time to remember.”
An enormous banner was raised at Footscray’s Town Hall on Monday to officially mark the city’s support.
A special film festival was held at Yarraville’s Sun Theatre on Monday and refugees will be pulling on the footy boots at the Whitten Oval today for the CALDplay football carnival.
A concert and shared dinner is at Braybrook Community Centre from 4-7pm tomorrow.
Celebrations wrap up with a “pay as you feel” lunch at Lentil as Anything on Friday.
A free fashion parade from the Karen community of Burma and Acholi dancers from Sudan will provide lunchtime entertainment.
Australia has resettled about 775, 000 refugees and other people in humanitarian need since the end of World War II.
