NAIDOC Week celebrations marking the vital contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to Maribyrnong are in full swing.
The week’s events began with a flag-raising ceremony and cultural workshop at the town hall on Monday morning, when local elders and artists demonstrated how to carve, burn and paint boomerangs and taught traditional basket-weaving skills.
A Scattered Tribes mixed media exhibition opened at Barkly Arts Centre last night and will remain open until July 14.
The show features photographic, textile and sculptural works (including images of deceased persons) by Aunty Vivienne Huston, Uncle Roy Alexander, Uncle John Hutchings and the late Aunty Isobel Loy, in collaboration with Liss Gabb and Aunty Francine Riches.
At West Footscray library from 6pm tonight, Koori culture historian and best-selling author Dr Gary Presland will deliver a talk.
Footscray Community Arts Centre is hosting two free exhibitions – Black Picket Fence and Tea. Black Picket Fence is a collaborative exhibition of photographic prints, installation, collage, paintings and drawings by Paola Balla and Megan Cadd.
Tea, a series of photographic images by Steven Rhall, honours and documents
the rituals carried out by four generations of his family.
Both exhibitions will be on show until August 19.
