Cricket: Less overs, shorter days for Premier Cricket

CRICKET Victoria has approved a number of changes to its Premier Cricket competition to take affect from 2012-13.

The most significant move was to shorten the length of its two-day matches.

In the first and second XIs, overs will be reduced from 100 to 90 a day in two-dayers.

The start time will be pushed back an hour with play to commence at midday.

It is the first time since 1988 that a six-hour playing day will not be used in Victoria’s top competition.

In a sign of the times, clubs have voted in favour of including Twenty20 matches into the season proper, where four competition points will be on offer for the 20-over-a-side games.

Cricket on Sundays is becoming a thing of the past with just two Sunday fixtures inserted into the home-and-away schedule.

Two Wednesday evening Twenty20 games will be played in December.

The breakdown of the formats in the first XI next season will be: seven two-dayers, six one-dayers and six Twenty20s.

The season begins with a one-day game on October 6.
