Making tracks to a great read

BOOKWORMS can show their love of all thing literary as part of National Bookshop Day activities this Saturday.

Buoyed by the success of the inaugural Bookshop Day last year, bookshops Australia-wide are showcasing their place in the community by inviting local authors and residents to take part in readings and conversation about books.

Deb Force, of Yarraville’s Sun Bookshop and The Younger Sun, says writers Josephine Rowe (Tarcutta Wake) and Chris Flynn (A Tiger in Eden) will become booksellers at the shop from 2.30-3.30pm. At The Younger Sun, celebrity booksellers will include Cath Crowley (10am), Danny Katz (11am), Claire Saxby (noon), Steven Lochran (1pm) and children’s book favourite Andy Griffiths (2pm). Visitors on the day get the chance to win a book a month for one year.

Adding to the fun of National Bookshop Day will be the specially created ‘The Lost Thing Passport’, inspired by Shaun Tan’s book The Lost Thing. The passport will enable book lovers to chronicle their journey through their favourite literary haunts, and guide them to new bookstores across Melbourne. It can be stamped at participating stores as readers make their way from Yarraville to Fairfield for a chance to win a special edition of Tan’s The Arrival.
