THE Maribyrnong Literary Festival will be launched in fine style at the end of this month, opening with a 1920s-style soiree featuring Footscray author Kerry Greenwood.
At an August 31 gala opening in the Footscray library courtyard, which will feature live music and period performances, Greenwood – fresh from the success of her Phryne Fisher murder mystery televisual series – will talk about writing fiction and the importance of ideas.
The event marks the first of many during 10 days dedicated to celebrating literary life across Maribyrnong.
The Age cartoonist Michael Leunig will reflect on his early life in Maribyrnong and Footscray and discuss its influence on his philosophy and creativity.
Other highlights will include talks by historian and author Dr John Lack, local poets Kristin Henry and Paul Mitchell, and critically acclaimed author Alice Pung.
In other sessions, people can learn about how their eating habits can change the world, join a discussion about the wonder of children’s literature, or dress up as their favourite literary character.
All events are free.
