Basketball
Altona Gators scored big at the annual Big V basketball awards night. Forward Scott Drysdale was the ‘most valuable player’ in the men’s youth league 2 and was joined in the all-star team by guard Param Singh. The youth league 2 women hit the mark, too, with Jenna Conroy selected as forward in the all-star team, while Randy Shanklin was ‘coach of the year’. Marie Costello’s contributions were recognised; she claimed the Lino Di Paola ‘volunteer of the year’ award.
Baseball
Baseball will take a bow this Sunday when a new-look Williamstown Wolves begins life under new coach Dean Marnell on the road in a clash with St Kilda. Newport Rams will be hoping to build on the solid form of last season in their home-opener against Springvale at KC White Reserve.
Water polo
Footscray is outside the Water Polo Victoria women’s state league 1 top-four after a 10-5 loss to Essendon at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre last Tuesday. However, in the men’s state league 1, the Scray remains in second place after a hard-fought 12-10 win over the MC Falcons at the same venue a night later.
