With preparations in full swing for Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup, an old hero continues to pull in big crowds. It’s 20 years since Subzero won the Melbourne Cup, but the thoroughbred is still a ‘rock star’. Last Thursday, the gelding visited Spotswood Primary School, accompanied by Melissa Weatherley, community education and careers officer at Racing Victoria. Ms Weatherley (pictured helping grade 3 pupil Emma don the racing silks), said the ‘Subbie’ visit was part of an RV program that “gives students the opportunity to meet a Melbourne Cup winner”. “We are trying to promote that love of horses, particularly for kids in a metro area who may not have directly encountered larger animals. It’s amazing to see him around the kids.” As part of his role as ‘community ambassador’, Subzero has visited 25 schools this year. The gelding, who was born in 1989, is still in good shape.
