WILLIAMSTOWN Wolves were at their clinical best in disposing of the Berwick City Cougars 8-3 in Baseball Victoria’s summer league division 2 at Cyril Molyneux Reserve on Saturday.
The Wolves avoided having to face Cougars ace Cameron Ross and feasted on the pitching as a result. The US import was unable to start after injuring his hand on Friday night.
Wolves batters Aaron Green (4-from-5) and Corey Hart (3-from-4) took a shining to the inexperienced pitchers served up by the home side and led their side to victory.
“The injury probably hampered their pitching capabilities,” Wolves playing president Ryan Camov said.
“We faced a couple of their younger guys and our disciplined batting line-up was able to take advantage of the situation.”
Green has been in devastating touch in the batters’ box. The lead-off hitter is an incredible 9-from-10 in the last two outings and nigh on impossible to fool.
“It’s just phenomenal,” Camov said. “He’s making it look effortless at the moment. Having him get on base that often and giving the guys in the two, three and four holes an opportunity to score those runs, it just makes such a huge difference.
“He plays to his strengths, he doesn’t overpower the ball and works with the pitch. His application is fantastic and he’s very focused in the box.”
Hart was the cherry on the top for the Wolves.
Batting in the nine spot, his ability to get on base was vital with Green being the next man in.
The Wolves mixed up their pitching rotation.
Wily veteran David Asp was given a rest after a heavy workload in the opening month.
Little-tried Daniel Chircop got his chance to throw the first baseball and didn’t let his coach Dean Marnell down, sending down three solid innings.
The Wolves moved into third on the ladder with a 4-1 record. They will cross the West Gate for a challenge with Bonbeach (2-3) at Bicentennial Park on Sunday.
