FLOYD Lodge community garden at Williamstown will throw open its gates on Saturday to show people how things have grown this year.
Terry De La Couer and Laura Vassallo are among the residents who have nurtured the garden dubbed ‘Floyd’s Patch’ at the base of the Hanmer Street public housing tower.
Sue Fitzpatrick, of the Friends of Floyd Lodge Community Garden Group, said the garden sprouted in 2009 as part of the state government’s Well for Life program, which promotes healthy eating and exercise for people over 55.
“It provides opportunities for the residents of Floyd Lodge to meet and interact,” she said.
“Many of the residents feel isolated from the broader community and are often stigmatised because of their place of residence.”
Bunnings staff recently visited, armed with seedlings, to enhance the garden, which boasts fruit, vegetables, herbs, trees and shrubs.
“Gardening is a great way to get outside and enjoy the fresh air,” Bunnings Altona manager Kevin Dent said.
Floyd’s Patch, at 63 Hanmer Street, Williamstown, will open from noon-2pm on Saturday. There will be a barbecue lunch, home-grown tomato plants for sale and a performance by the Willin Wimmin singing group.
