WILLIAMSTOWN doctor Mark Shackleton was last week awarded the $50,000 Life Scientist of the Year award at the Prime Minister’s Prizes for Science in Canberra.
Dr Shackleton, of the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, was recognised for his research that has changed people’s understanding of melanoma tumours and opened up new treatment paths.
He has demonstrated for the first time that an entire solid organ, a functioning breast, could be grown from a single stem cell.
The prizes honour those who have made significant contributions to building a more prosperous and progressive society through scientific achievements and science education.
