People are being invited to see what class was like for Victorian schoolchildren when the Old Laverton School is opened up during the National Trust Australian Heritage Festival.

Hobsons Bay has a packed calendar of events for the festival, which runs until May 21.

The 120-year-old school, which is one of the last single-room school houses in Melbourne, also has a restored World War I honour board commemorating former students.

Located at 43 Kiora Street in Altona Meadows, the school will be open from noon-3pm on Saturday, April 29.

On Thursday, May 4, from 2-4pm, Williamstown Mechanics Institute will be open for afternoon tea, tours and a talk by Bron Lowden, author of

Mechanics Institutes, Schools of Arts, Athenaeums, etc. Visitors will be able to see a display of memorabilia including playbills, tickets, menus and invitation cards.

Both events are free but bookings are preferred by contacting 99322001.
