Dim view of dieting

Newport mother-of-two Sarah Vincent was on her way to get her daily dim sims when she had an epiphany.

That was three years ago when she weighed 122 kilograms.

The author of Death by Dim Sim recounts the pivotal moment that led to her shedding 40 kilograms over 21 months.

“I’d just been reading about how being seriously overweight was as bad as smoking,” Ms Vincent said. “I was on my way to get my afternoon daily dim sims and I just had this thought that if they’re doing death by cigarette, then I’m doing death by dim sim.”

Ms Vincent, 50, said she had tried crash and fad diets since she was a teenager, so she decided to try something different. She contacted Spotswood nutritionist Aprille McMahon.

“She taught me this extraordinary way of eating called low-carb high-fat, which is very big overseas – it hasn’t really gotten huge here yet but it will – and the weight just fell off me,” Ms Vincent said.

“I’ve lost 40 kilos eating full-fat milk, cream, cheese, lots of good fats.”

Death by Dim Sim will be launched at Newport Community Hub on April 27 from 6.30-7.45pm, with Ms Vincent in conversation with her nutritionist.

The free launch is part of Homegrown Hobsons Bay, a program supporting writers with a connection to Hobsons Bay.

Bookings are required via Hobsons Bay Libraries.
