June 29, 1977

Werribee Shire Council, on Monday, began a campaign to have Werribee included in the metropolitan area for the purposes of the Liquor Control Commission thus reducing the price of beer and liquor. Werribee, which has been outside the brewery free delivery area and classified as country by the Australian Hotels Association, was recently officially classified as “country” by the report of the recent inquiry into liquor pricing.

June 24, 1987

A Werribee woman, believed to have been near death when ambulance men used the jaws of life to pull her from the wreckage of her car, claims she was hit by a semi-trailer. Miss Ingrid Russ, 48, of Broken Crt, Werribee, was trapped in her hired Toyota utility near Albury for 40 minutes while rescuers fought to stabilise her condition.

A shake-up of the water industry could cost Wyndham council $30,000 a year if the municipality is to keep its flood warning system. The future of the flood warning system was put in doubt after a move by Southern Rural Water (SRW) to shift the onus for the operation and maintenance of the Werribee catchments Flood Automated Local Evaluation in Real Time (ALERT) System.

A state-first pilot program is being trialed by Wyndham’s police, in a bid to have them spend more time on the beat, and less in the office. From Monday, the Werribee station began to use a call centre in a three-month trial to reduce the amount of time police officers spend completing paperwork and filing reports.
