May 4, 1977

The State Government has approved a $2m interest subsidised loan to enable Werribee Shire Council to proceed with a drainage and flood mitigation scheme west of Werribee River. Member for Werribee, Mr. Neville Hudson, told the Banner on Monday night that final cabinet approval had been given that afternoon and “our troubles are over,” he said, “this was our greatest need”.

One of Werribee’s greatest historical war memorials has been forgotten despite the annual reminder of the Anzac motto, “Lest we forget”. And while servicemen from previous campaigns marched in honour of their fallen comrades on Saturday, Werribee’s “Avenue of Honor” was as quiet as a graveyard.

A Werribee South family whose mother died suddenly of meningitis has slammed the health department for not informing the public about the killer disease. Mrs Sandra Toffolon, in her early 40s, died within three hours of showing physical signs of meningococcal septicaemia a fortnight ago.

What was supposed to be a celebration of moving out of home ended in terror for Hoppers Crossing resident Andrew Weybury. He was marking the occasion with his friends at Volt Nightclub on May 6, when he was hit in the head with a glass bottle about 2.30am.
