Thieves have stolen copper cabling valued at more than $200,000 from sports facilities in Wyndham.
Wyndham council mayor Mia Shaw last week said there had been 10 separate incidents of copper cables being stolen from sports venues within the municipality in recent weeks.
Cr Shaw urged residents to report suspicious behaviour at sports grounds to police.
“These thefts are very concerning and results in significant work needing to be undertaken to make these facilities fully operational again,” Cr Shaw said.
“It is also costing ratepayers a substantial amount of money to replace the cables and reinstall them.
“This is disappointing – our sporting facilities are places where our community can come together and connect.
“With copper cabling being stolen, and these facilities being rendered unusable, it’s the entire community missing out.”
Cr Shaw said the thefts usually occurred late at night or early in the morning.
“We have had reports of up to four people in two SUVs being seen in the immediate areas of the thefts,” she said.
Anybody who witnesses suspicious activity at sports facilities should contact triple-0.
